MDS Advertising ‘Zombie’ Campaign Nets Silver Davey Award

AUSTIN, Texas /Advertising Industry Newswire/ — In tough economic times, advertising dollars are held more tightly than gold. So it’s newsworthy when a company not only invests, but takes risks, to promote its business. Now MDS Advertising, an Austin ad agency, is winning the confidence of ROI-conscious companies with breakthrough creative that’s returning more than its weight in results-it already earned an industry award.

“MDS Advertising stands out from the rest, right from the start,” says David Hubbard, the agency’s executive vice president and creative director. “We wrap the campaign in a concept, first,” says Hubbard.

MDS Advertising recently tested its approach on a medical-billing services client.

Revenue Cycle Inc (www.revenuecycleinc.com), together with its subsidiary RC Billing, provide products and services to help radiation and oncology professionals understand changing federal regulations, and implement the latest medical billing rules and best practices.

RC Billing President Sally Eggleston explains the business challenge, noting, “Too often healthcare providers miss opportunities to bill for services because they don’t fully understand the rules. Or they’ve lost revenue because they weren’t in compliance with a regulation.”

“That’s why it was so important for us to get the word out… before and during the conference,” Eggleston adds.

Hubbard and the MDS team presented a daring concept, using dramatic poster artwork from the classic zombie film Night of the Living Dead as the basis for its creative campaign.

Ron DiGiaimo, president and chief executive officer of Revenue Cycle Inc recalls, “I was skeptical at first but MDS encouraged us to step outside our comfort zone.”

Hubbard explains, “We chose classic scary imagery to capture the underlying anxiety that billing-services providers feel about annual coding regulations that govern radiation and oncology billing practices … then used it in a fun way. It’s unexpected.”

Also unexpected was an advertising industry accolade. MDS Advertising won a 2009 International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA) Davey Award for its creative advertising work on the Revenue Cycle Inc/RC Billing campaign. The award recognizes the campaign’s “Save Yourself from the Beast” campaign which launched prior to the 33rd American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) conference.

Revenue Cycle Inc and RC Billing recently exhibited and presented seminars at the ASTRO conference, the 26th Annual Meeting of the Society for Radiation Oncology Administrators (SROA), and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) 2009 conference.

About the award-winning campaign, RC Billing’s Eggleston observes, “It was really fresh and exciting; We loved it. But more importantly, attendees loved it. They’d come up to our exhibit booths talking about it.”

Revenue Cycle Inc experienced high-volume traffic at its ASTRO, SROA, and ASRT exhibit booths, reported increased workshop attendance, and received positive feedback from conference attendees, as well as surprising praise from the conference organizer.

DiGiaimo credits the MDS approach with the campaign’s success. “Now I’m thankful to my team that we moved forward [with the campaign],” DiGiaimo says.

The Silver Davey Award win adds to MDS Advertising’s impressive mantle of industry accolades spanning three ADDY awards, nine Hermes Creative awards, eight Summit Creative awards, ten Telly Awards, and now six Silver Davey awards.

MDS, Award-winning Austin Ad Agency Keeps New Biz Wins Flowing in Tight Economy

AUSTIN, Texas — David Hubbard, executive vice president and creative director for Austin ad agency MDS Advertising, announced today that MDS would serve as agency of record for the just completed AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center at the University of Texas at Austin. MDS will create a comprehensive launch and awareness campaign for the $140 million, Lake/Flato designed hotel, meeting and executive education complex that opened in late September. The center is under the operational direction of FLIK International, a division of UK-based hospitality giant, Compass Group PLC.

MDS AustinThe AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center (www.meetattexas.com) features sophisticated meeting and conferencing facilities, 297 guest rooms, upscale and casual restaurants, boutique-hotel amenities and an array of catering services. With quiet elegance and unmatched proximity to the university’s many resources, the complex was designed to be a leading center for executive education and the central gathering place for UT faculty, as well as the destination of choice for those drawn by the university’s and Austin’s cultural, educational, business, athletic and academic happenings.

“We were honored to be selected by the AT&T Conference Center as their agency,” said Hubbard, “and pleased that MDS continues to win new accounts in today’s economy. Our client family is diverse-and that diversity is invigorating creatively. From a business perspective, diversity keeps the agency strong and the ideas fresh. Doing creative work for multiple types of industries means we stay flexible, versatile and inspired.”

Additional new client partnerships for MDS include Layher USA, the American arm of global scaffolding giant, Layher International (www.layher.com). According to Hubbard, MDS will rebuild the company’s stateside brand presence and create a new website and ad campaign focused on strengthening Layher’s U.S. market penetration. Recognized as a leader in the scaffolding industry in Europe, New Zealand and Australia, Layher is an industry forerunner widely acknowledged for its leadership, engineering, safety and product innovation in scaffolding technology. Layher is the originator of the integrated modular scaffolding system.

Other new MDS clients closer to the agency’s hometown in Austin include The Texas Department of Information Resources (www.dir.state.tx.us). MDS will work with DIR on branding initiatives, including collateral and trade show exhibit. The DIR mission is to transform the delivery of technology to government agencies and public education institutions so they can better serve the citizens of Texas.

Another new MDS client with global roots is TREESwithMEANING.com – an innovative, online company that will be the first and only company to bring genuine Israeli olive trees to the U.S. market. TREESwithMEANING.com will offer its first release of certified, hand-cultivated olive trees imported from the Holy Land in April 2009, in a limited edition of 6,500 trees. MDS is developing branding and a launch ad campaign, collaterals, as well as a website and e-commerce platform for the company.

While new business is essential, successful client relationships that continue over the long haul are equally important, says Hubbard. According to the creative director, MDS puts a high priority on delivering quality performance and client satisfaction year after year.

To demonstrate the point, Hubbard notes that, along with new client festivities, MDS will celebrate its tenth year working with another high-profile UT-affiliated client-the University of Texas Investment Management Company. MDS began working with UTIMCO in 1999. The ad agency developed UTIMCO’s brand identity, and has been designing and producing UTIMCO’s award winning, multi-piece annual report collateral sets and its online annual reports since then. UTIMCO’s 2007 annual report was a 24-piece set that earned MDS multiple design awards.

UTIMCO (www.utimco.org) manages the largest public endowment fund in the United States. Managing the investment assets under the fiduciary care of the UT System Board of Regents, the organization oversees investments valued at more that $24 billion. A leader in the advancement of fund management practices for public and private endowments, UTIMCO was the first external investment management corporation formed by a public university.

Clearly, successful long-term client agency partnerships start with successful first year relationships Hubbard notes. “When you start out with a new client, it always feels great,” he says. “The real test happens over time. When you feel even more excited by the possibilities as you continue with a client-you know it’s going to be great for a long time.” Hubbard is celebrating another one of those type successes this month.

“We’ve just completed our first year working with the Iron Workers District Council of Texas and the Mid-South States. We developed a long-range campaign for this terrific organization which is now launching.”

The union brought MDS in to work with them on new branding, collateral and website design for a national initiative focused on rebuilding market share, strengthening partnerships between the union and signatory contractors and recruitment efforts. To make certain the effort hit the ground with serious traction in Texas and the mid-South, MDS developed an evolved, sexy and strongly messaged brand renovation, website (www.ironworkerstxmidsouth.com) and a series of multi-tiered print and online campaigns to drive recruitment and B2B development initiatives.

“We face many of the same challenges our clients face,” says Hubbard. “You’ve got to get creative to get your message out there and make it important to your audience. You have to break through the clutter and let your audience know the value-to them- of what you do. Our clients have great products, services and ideas-our job is to make sure we get that message over to their markets. That’s where the fun begins.”

We’ve always taken corporate social responsibity very seriously, and it gives all of us here a warm and fuzzy to do what little we can to give something back to worthwhile causes.”

Neotrope USANeotrope, and its division Send2Press Newswire (www.Send2Press.com), have previously sponsored art benefits contributing to aid efforts for the homeless in Chicago, groups providing environmentally sustainable housing in areas of the world where disaster has left people without adequate shelter; and to orgs who raise money for Tanzanian AIDS orphans. Organizations will be selected as applications are received, and the amount donated to each selected non-profit will vary. Half of the grants will be provided to California-based non-profits, who will receive additional promotional assistance through California Newswire®. Additionally, all 501(c)(3) organizations automatically qualify for a 20% service discount. Finally, all qualified applicant organizations will be entered into a drawing to win a new One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) notebook which can be used for fund-raising purposes.

Climate Leaders program

Rizco Design Joins EPA’s Climate Leaders Program

MANASQUAN, N.J. — As a part of its continued commitment to environmental improvement, today Rizco Design, an award-winning, graphic design firm in Manasquan, N.J., announced its participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders program. By participating in Climate Leaders, Rizco has pledged to measure and reduce its corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over a period of five years. Rizco Design is the first graphic design firm in the country to be accepted into the program.

Climate Leaders programClimate Leaders is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. Partner companies commit to reducing their impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of their greenhouse gas emissions based on a quality management system, setting aggressive reduction goals and annually reporting their progress to EPA. Through program participation, companies create a credible record of their accomplishments and receive EPA recognition as corporate environmental leaders.

“Rizco Design has dedicated the last year to going green starting with how our office operates, to the creative process of a project and to the final project. Measuring our greenhouse gas emissions and setting reduction goals was the obvious next step,” said Debra Rizzi, Partner, Rizco Design. Considering that 26.8 million small businesses (less than 500 employees) were calculated in the U.S. in 2006, it is obvious that small businesses collectively play an integral role in global warming. Becoming part of the Climate Leaders program is just one more way that we, as a company and as designers, are showcasing how small changes can reduce our impact on overall global climate change.”

Rizco Design is an award winning graphic design firm with strength in corporate identity and print design. Motivated by the major impact that paper and printing decisions have on the environment, the firm began a review of its ecological footprint and launched Beleaf in May 2007, an environmental program that is measurable and therefore accountable.

In August 2008 the Beleaf program is re-evolving into a comprehensive effort that includes education, consulting and non-profit efforts. One aspect of the Beleaf program includes an eco-educational clothing line made of high quality and recyclable fabrics with environmental messages that inspire children and adults alike to make “One Change Now.” One percent of every sale of Beleaf clothing is donated to the non-profit organization 1% For the Planet, which is an alliance of companies that recognize the true cost of doing business and donate one percent of their sales to environmental organizations worldwide.

Within this past year, Rizco Design was recognized by the Art Directors Club of N.J. and N.Y., Graphic Design USA and the Ad Club of N.J. for their work on the launch of Beleaf.

Multimedia Marketing: Media Mayhem Corporation

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Media Mayhem Corporation (MMC) announced this week that the company has assumed a “tight control” on the war for breaking multi-media platform strategy in a field that chews companies up and spits them out when they cannot produce what the client needs in today’s ever changing online advertising world. True multi-platform media marketing is a strategy that is now being accepted as the stand alone gold standard in the industry and MMC has found a way to capitalize on the marketing concept with its client roster that is growing like a California wildfire in the summertime.

“Media Mayhem Corporation understands the need for the now and not for the then,” says V.P. Business Development Jamie Ashe. “We are the one company that knows the (how) right off the bat so our clients know already walking in the door that it isn’t a question of whether we can provide them a strategy to win but can we live up to the hype that so many agencies and firms brag about. The answer is unequivocally yes without a doubt. We don’t come to work to fail, we come to work to win and if that means we spend off hours getting a big job done right, it gets done right.”

media mayhem multimedia marketingMedia Mayhem Corporation has already conquered what so many are just trying to get off the ground with their companies. The company has already shifted their operations into gear and applied technologies such as mobile and digital advertising, podcasting, live streaming, live interactive streaming, offline events, sponsorships, footpath tracking technology, live interactive surveys among others.

“Just the tip of the iceberg,” says CEO Jeff Chi. “We are using ‘OTA’ (over the air transfer) as we mainstream our bowl of resources together and converge synergistic campaigns both on and offline for our clients and adding in mainstream and non-mainstream concepts – not just banners anymore.”

“If you want what you want then you should be able to get it,” adds Chi. “With a powerful sales force automation, intimate and bullet proof customer service management, and all of the cutting edge concepts already being used in our day to day operations, the only way we can fail is if we stopped caring about what we do and who we do it for, and that is one thing MMC is not going to do. Ever.”

PowerFlite Communications

PowerFlite Communications Wins NevaSlip Advertising and Branding Account

QUINCY, Mass. — PowerFlite Communications, an advertising, design, and branding firm headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts, has been hired by the NevaSlip(TM) brand to promote that company’s recent nationwide expansion.

“The architects and building owners who have used NevaSlip know the insurance and liability benefits it delivers in relation to their tile, stone, and concrete floors,” says PowerFlite Principal and Creative Director Greg Robertson. “But the design and building trade is a hands-on business, so having the locations to serve all 50 states now is great for NevaSlip, and its clients. They want to get the word out, of course, and we’re just glad they chose us to do it.”

PowerFlite Communications PowerFlite’s plan for NevaSlip includes a strategic mix of trade advertising, direct mail, and public relations, accented by a bold new brand identity package that includes their new “We’ve got you covered” positioning line. Robertson says the NevaSlip website (www.nevaslip.com) pre-dates PowerFlite’s involvement, but is also likely to be updated as the campaign progresses. Marketing budgets are not yet finalized, but are believed to be under $1 million for the first year.

Based in Lynn, Massachusetts, NevaSlip is an advanced anti-slip floor service that helps architects and building owners reduce insurance and legal costs by giving marble, terrazzo, tile, granite, and concrete floors a Static Coefficient of Friction (SCOF) that meets federal ADA standards. Guaranteed for 8 years, NevaSlip uses an environmentally-safe, “green” formula that is also invisible to the eye.

Robertson describes PowerFlite Communications as a small group of highly-experienced advertising and marketing people giving clients strategically-smart, concept-based creative work to instigate real world reactions. Maybe the firm’s motivational call-to-arms says it best, and simplest, in prodding clients and prospects to “Fly Higher.”

In addition to NevaSlip, PowerFlite’s other recent work includes print, outdoor, TV, and brand identity projects for Quincy Medical Center, the Metropolitan New York Library Council, Maxima Mortgage, SHARED, Inc., Emerson Hospital, and Twinkle Designs.

Creative Successes Push Innovative MDS Advertising to Ranking Among Austin’s Top 12 Ad Agencies

AUSTIN, Texas — High-performance MDS Advertising is among Austin’s top dozen creative ad agencies according to results announced Friday in the Austin Business Journal ranking of the top 25 advertising firms in Austin. MDS has been a creative secret weapon for its clients since 1991 when MDS moved to Austin from Los Angeles. But with client ad budgets cresting $22 million in 2006, MDS will take its place among ad industry players in the city.

The company was launched by design and marketing wizard David Hubbard, and software developer Victoria Marasco after the partners expanded their successful California software design and marketing company to Texas, and opened MDS Advertising in Austin. They built the lean, high-creative, design-savvy and full-service Austin ad agency, keeping a low profile and aiming for big results for its clients. However, their burgeoning record of success is pushing MDS into view, and Friday’s listing as a top Austin ad agency has put an end to the pastoral anonymity MDS has enjoyed.

Victoria Marasco and David HubbardMDS flew under the radar for the last 15 years and focused strictly on creating results-producing advertising, branding and collaterals for its client family. In the last 18 months, MDS quietly racked up $1.5 billion in sales for one of its largest clients, Montecito Property Company (an industry leader it helped grow from start up). It helped launch a $14-million medical real estate investment company and put together comprehensive collaterals and multi-media for a 2-day Korean tradeshow that netted its client $25 million in sales.

It produced its seventh and frequently award-winning annual report for UTIMCO – whose $21 billion portfolio makes it one of the nation’s largest university fund management companies – and orchestrated comprehensive brand launches for a small, yet colorful galaxy of clients that included brand launches for a natural cookie startup company, aesthetic medical spas and luxury realty firms. MDS counts among its client portfolio, major national brands such as Wal-Mart and Dell Computers, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, One World Theatre and a fleet of clients who enjoy the agency’s imaginative and hardworking ad and marketing creative seen on its website, www.mdsadvertising.com.

The futuristic and architecturally unique MDS offices are located on a scenic 10-acre site in the west Austin hills. The studio is command center for a constellation of a dozen MDS creatives who work with an extensive virtual team of art directors, illustrators, marketing strategists, researchers and market analysts, writers, designers, photographers and film pros, editors, web experts, media planners and account managers – pulled together in precise teams that are configured and reconfigured as clients, creative goals and budgets demand.

According to MDS executive creative director David Hubbard, the “recombinant” flexibility and experience of the MDS virtual team process is a key reason the agency continues to remain so efficient, responsive and creatively productive for its clients. “While it’s true we do have clients whose budgets run in the millions – they really don’t want to be paying for big team overhead, just big team results. They expect and need real return on their investment. What MDS delivers is results. My goal is that the dollars our clients invest in MDS advertising creative come back to their bottom line exponentially. That’s the job we commit to doing when we take on a client – I want them to know they can count on return from MDS creative,” he says.

Excellent proof of Hubbard’s intention and the agency’s long-standing credo is demonstrated in the results MDS achieved for its clients in the last year. Hubbard is proud to point out that MDS Advertising is credited by its client Montecito Property Company for driving sales of more than $1.5 billion in 2006 and successfully branding and marketing over 20 subrands for the industry giant in the highly competitive luxury resort condominium industry.

“In the last 18 months, we launched more than twenty, high end condo development projects ranging in value from $60 to $220 million in top U.S. markets. We sold out a number of them in less than three days,” Hubbard said. One sellout took only 91 minutes and netted the client $90 million, roughly a million dollars a minute in sales, a win that, according to company founder and CEO Chip Conk, was an event that surely had to be “…a world record” in the annals of real estate success stories, and greatly attributable to the full-spectrum lifestyle ad campaign developed by MDS.

MDS faced intense, ongoing pressure to move responsively and rapidly to constantly re-engage Montecito’s universe of potential buyers and investors across multiple markets. With 20 plus sub brands in the Montecito corporate family, the deadlines and pressure was fierce. But, MDS kept its hallmark creative cool and kept producing results.

“No matter what kind of unreasonable drop dead was required, MDS created, produced and trafficked every campaign seamlessly-optimizing a $22 million dollar ad budget that translated into an enormous volume of television, radio and print ads,” said MPC director of national marketing, Cindi Boudreaux. “MDS Advertising has helped push Montecito’s gross revenue above $1.5 billion in sales last year.”

Says Hubbard, “You could say MDS Advertising is boutique in size-but we produce a hefty amount of great work. In general, our accounts range from $300k to well above a million dollars annually.”

“Though MDS is roughly 1/30 the size of Austin’s largest, and most well-known ad agency,” says Hubbard, “I feel that we can claim creative standards as high as any, and higher than most. We are talented, competent, capable, swift and imaginative; we love bringing our clients to the front of the market, and driving their success through great branding and rich back story,” he continues. “And, I assure you, we are very good at doing that. We like to bring home the bacon.”

It seems MDS is also fond of bringing home the bling. Last year MDS Advertising won 19 awards of the 23 entries it submitted to stellar international advertising competitions. For 2006, MDS took 19 trophies back to Austin – winning nine Telly awards; five Davey awards; three Addys; and silver and bronze Summit awards for its work in video and film, annual report design, copywriting, design, package design and branding.

“MDS is lean, productive and especially strong on branding, campaign design and positioning. Our experience in corporate and institutional marketing, real estate and resorts, finance and revenue management, national non-profits, new product launch and visionary ventures of many types is solid and effective,” says Hubbard.
