End of Life Choices California announced today the official launch of its newly established non-profit organization dedicated to providing factual information and personal support regarding California's End of Life Option Act (EOLOA) and all other legal end-of-life options to the medical community and to the public.

The End of Life Option Act is a California law that permits terminally ill adult patients with the capacity to make medical decisions to be prescribed aid-in-dying medication by their doctor if certain conditions are met. The law went into effect on June 9, 2016.

End of Life Choices California (EOLCCA) was started by four individuals active in the successful statewide effort to pass the legislation legalizing medical aid in dying for terminally ill Californians. The founders recognized that Californians diagnosed with a terminal or chronic illness deserve comprehensive education about, and access to, all legal options concerning their end of life wishes and medical treatment. EOLCCA provides a platform for individuals to fully explore, discuss and make informed choices about end of life options consistent with their personal values and beliefs.

EOLCCA is building a model statewide program, currently launched in Southern California with plans to expand throughout the state, which provides volunteer advocates available to answer questions and provide personal support to anyone seeking to learn more about end-of-life planning.

Client advocate volunteers provide guidance throughout the entire end of life process including: preparing Advance Directives, discussing the possibility of stopping unwanted medical treatment, when to consider hospice or palliative care, or simply how to have conversations with loved ones or doctors about their wishes. In addition to individual patient support, EOLCCA provides informative sessions about the End of Life Option Act to organizations, retirement centers, colleges and universities, non-profits, and more.

"The truth is that we all die. Why not plan for an ending that can retain the dignity of a life lived well and offer some peace to the people you leave behind?" said Judy Neall Epstein, Founding Director and Board President.

End of Life Choices California launched its new website, which details the work they do, and provides contact information, excellent resources, and ways to support the mission by training to be a volunteer and making a donation. All information and personal support is provided free-of-charge. For further information please visit https://endoflifechoicesca.org/.
