A recent study, conducted by researchers for MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care in New York, found that 60 percent of hospice enrollments occurred through telephone outreach alone, compared with around 40 percent who enrolled after being referred through a community-based specialist palliative care program. A second unrelated study, published in the International Journal of Palliative Nursing, found that through the use of an 1-800-HOSPICE phone number service in Australia, end-of-life patients were able to reduce ambulance contact and emergency department admission, and increase their likelihood of dying at home (for patients whose preference was to die at home).
